The demonstrations that took place in various regions across Indonesia, including Jakarta, Surabaya, and Makassar, which ended in violence, have raised concerns from various segments of society, including those in higher education.
The Rector of Wijaya Putra University (UWP), Dr. Budi Endarto, S.H., M.Hum., expressed his concern over the events that occurred, including the burning of two cultural heritage buildings in Surabaya: the West Side Grahadi Building and the Tegal Sari Police Station on Saturday, August 30, 2025.
"I urge students and all levels of society not to act in anarchic ways in expressing their aspirations," said Budi Endarto when met at UWP on Monday (September 1).
He supports the expression of aspirations by the community and student groups, including UWP students, as this is a constitutional right of citizens.
"Expressing aspirations is the right of every citizen. This is guaranteed by the Constitution and is part of the implementation of Indonesia's democratic state," he said.
However, he emphasized that when expressing aspirations, one should not damage public facilities that could harm other members of the public.
He advised students and the people of Surabaya and the surrounding areas to maintain order and express their aspirations in a positive manner.
"Let's play Surabaya, friends! Maintain the stability of our city and all regions in Indonesia. Maintain national unity," he concluded.
