UWP Lecturer's Innovation: Processing Styrofoam Waste into Economically Valuable Products
Efforts to create a clean environment while boosting the local economy continue to be intensified. One example is Wijaya Putra University (UWP), which has implemented an innovation by transforming Styrofoam waste into products with economic value.
This innovation was realized through a Community Service (PKM) program in Beton Village, Menganti District, Gresik Regency. The lecturers' involvement has delighted the Gresik community.
Held at UD Tiga Putra, the UWP teaching team provided integrated training to small business owners. This activity not only focused on processing Styrofoam waste using Appropriate Technology (TTG) machines but also equipped participants with various business-supporting skills.
"Styrofoam waste has the potential to pollute the environment if left untreated. With this technology, we teach how to process it into products with economic value," explained Gatot Setyono, ST., MT., a UWP lecturer involved in the activity.
In addition, participants received training in the use of Light Fire Extinguishers (APAR) as part of workplace safety practices. Other assistance included obtaining a Business Identification Number (NIB) to ensure businesses have official legal standing, while also opening access to collaboration and capital.
The team of lecturers also introduced simple financial record-keeping. According to Dr. Rodhiyah, SE., MM., most MSMEs have great potential but are hampered by poor financial administration.
"With neat record-keeping, business owners can monitor profits, manage cash flow, and gain greater credibility when seeking partners or applying for loans," she said.
Occupational safety was also a focus. Miftahul Ulum, ST., MT., emphasized the importance of fire extinguishers (APAR) for small businesses. "K3 awareness is often overlooked. However, a good understanding can prevent significant losses due to fires," he said.
Through this series of activities, UD Tiga Putra is expected to develop into a more independent, innovative, and sustainable MSME. The synergy between the campus, government, and community also demonstrates that collaboration can provide real solutions for the environment while boosting the local economy.
