BEM AGRICULTURE Wijaya Putra University Organizes Farming Women's School in Karangcangkring Gresik
Gender issues are
the fifth goal of sustainable development (SDG's), including the role of women
in political and economic issues. In the economic sector, women have a role in
the agricultural sector, but there are still many inequalities and fairness in
gender empowerment. This inequality occurs in Karangcangkring Village, Kec.
Shaman, Kab. Gresik.
Based on the results of observations and
interviews conducted by the BEM of the Faculty of Agriculture, it was found
that the problem that occurred was that female farmers in Karangcangkring
Village did not have the opportunity to take part in extension and empowerment
activities.
This results in women farmers not having
access to information and resources, so there is a need for empowerment for
women farmers in Karangcangkring Village.
The priority issue for female farmers in Karangcangkring Village is
skills in cultivating food crops that are safe and friendly for women.
So, through the Ormawa PPK Program
organized by BELMAWA Dikti, the Ormawa BEM Agriculture PPK Team together with
the village head formulated the empowerment of women farmers based on
hydroponic plant cultivation skills.
Hydroponics is considered modern
agriculture that is friendly and safe for women because it does not require
excessive energy and is practical to maintain.
From the description of the problems above,
it is necessary to empower women farmers through the Sustainable Food Farming
Women's School in Karangcangkring Village for Family Food Security.
The implementation of the Women's Farming
School is supported by the results of research conducted by supervisor Dwiyana
Anela Kurniasari, S.P., M.Si with the title Strategy for Empowering Women
Farmers in Karangcangkring Village, Dukun District, Gresik Regency which
formulated alternative empowerment for women farmers, one of which is the
Women's School Farmer.
The Women's Farming School is a farming
school for women farmers in Karangcangkring Village. This farming school can
provide additional knowledge and training for women farmers to improve their
skills. This program is in accordance with the Ormawa PPK Team as managers of
Hydroponic cultivation at the Green House, Faculty of Agriculture, Wijaya Putra
University.
Apart from managing hydroponic cultivation,
the PPK Ormawa Team received visits from schools around Surabaya and Gresik to
learn about hydroponics at the Green House and empower the community and
schools around Wijaya Putra University to cultivate hydroponics.
Apart from cultivating, the Ormawa PPK Team
also sells hydroponic vegetables directly to end users. So the Ormawa PPK Team
has experience in empowering and assisting hydroponic cultivation in the
community. Apart from that, student members of the Ormawa PPK Team have taken
Agricultural Extension courses.
